Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like. – David Alan Harvey

FLASH – FRENZY !!!

Salam semua !! Good morning/afternoon/evening (it depends on WHEN u read my post)

Masa ni saya sedang lepak di Kota Damansara after a whole day bertapa di Nikonian Academy menuntut ilmu dalam kelas ke-3 saya bersama akademi ini iaitu kelas : FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY.

Most of the participants dalam kelas kali ni datang dari kelas B2I yang sama several weeks back. And of course I made some new friends also – John from Los Angeles USA and also Esther from Hungary,Naz,Keesh (one of the tallest 15 years old I ever met!) and some others =)

My sifu like always is Andrew Boey .Rommel and Wei Liang also there to help us participants to harness the true potential of flash photography.

Before this, I actually never use Flash. In fact, I even don’t own one hehehe. To come to this class, I borrowed my friend’s flash unit (Wan Faizal’s)

So, we started the class around 10 am, and below I recapped what I’ve learned today:

  1. Get to know – what really matters in a pictures – Photo Psycho Metric – where the eyes land on a picture
  2. The Big 5 :  Coverage – Shadow – Highlights- Edges – Reflection
  3. More Lighting Theories
  4. What not to do using Flash
  5. How to manipulate Aperture & Shutter to control light on the subject and the background
  6. How to freeze motion using Flash
  7. Rear curtain vs Front curtain
  8. How Power,Distance and Coverage effect the lighting
  9. Art of TTL
  10. How, where, when to bounce light
  11. Getting creative by Off Flash Camera techniques (Optical Trigger,Radio Trigger,CLS)
  12. 888 concept
  13. Dan banyak lagi lah  =)

A bit technical, but with the clear instructions by the Sifu + Trainers, I managed to get hold some of the important points

Below I will share several pictures taken during the class. The model is Amy and also Arash.

Special remark : Still – NO POST PROCESSING INVOLVED – only add watermarks

Picture #1

Remark : This picture I just took to prove the effect if we use / point the Flash DIRECTLY to the model face. Resulting very harsh lightning and the skin looks also pale..

So, by applying all the theories that I’ve learned , below are the pictures that I took using TTL mode.

OK, after we have fun using TTL ( surprisingly simple), we were told that TTL doesn’t really make a photo stand out. To make the picture “screaming” with WOW factors – enter the OFF CAMERA FLASH techniques !

OFF CAMERA PLASH #1

remark : picture above taken using more than 1 flash unit . Usage of colour gels and also positioning of the flash units contribute to the mood of the picture. After several shoots – we were taught on how to effectively use the umbrella

Now here comes the delicious part – OUTDOOR ! All of us went to shoot outdoor ( around 5 pm – 6.30pm) . Using the same OFF CAMERA technique, here are some of my shots =)

Whooooa. after this class, I gotta have my own Flash unit.

I’ve learned a lot during this class. After this, I will have to find the time to practice more and more and put my knowledge to the test !

By the way – tomorrow (5th Dec 2010) I also have another Class – Professional Portrait =)

That’s is all from me this time.

-mesti banyak gile bad grammar- hehehe. Takpe, lepas ni Bahasa Melayu balik =)

Jumpa lagi!!!!!! =)

    • aidawahab – tq for dropping by reading my blog yang tak sebeberapa ni =)

Setahu yang saya pelajari , OFF Camera techniques ada beberapa – dalam gambar yang saya amek tu, saya just guna teknik Optical Triggering (yang paling senang, murah dan u can use RM250 – RM400 nyer flash gun pun boleh). Then ada lagi Radio Triggering , dan finally CLS.. Radio Trigerring and CLS saya tak try buat lagi =)
